clipped from lambiek.net Rudolph Dirks (26/2/1877, Germany - 20/4/1968, USA) Born in Heide, Germany, Rudolph Dirks moved with his parents to Chicago at the age of seven. By 1894, he was already selling cartoons to Judge and Life magazine. He was employed by the New York Journal in 1897. His editor asked him to create a strip that could compete with the popularity of 'The Yellow Kid' by Outcault, which was published in a rival newspaper, The New York World. Dirks came up with 'The Katzenjammer Kids', a strip strongly inspired by 'Max und Moritz' by Wilhelm Busch. The strip was one of the first strips to use a permanent cast and a frame sequence. Shell faces shareholder revolt over Canadian tar sands project

Photograph: Jeff McIntosh/AP Shell chief executive Peter Voser will be forced to defend the company's controversial investment in Canada's tar sands at his first annual general meeting, after calls from shareholders that the project be put under further scrutiny. A coalition of institutional investors has forced a resolution onto the agenda calling for the Anglo-Dutch group's audit committee to undertake a special review of the risks attached to the carbon-heavy oil production at Athabasca in Alberta. Co-operative Asset Management and 141 other institutional and individual shareholders raise "concerns for the long-term success of the company arising from the risks associated with oil sands."

Shell has insisted that "unconventional" hydrocarbon sources such as tar sands are all justified to ensure that the world does not run out of oil too soon. But environmentalists have condemned their exploitation as "the biggest environmental crime in history" and said it must be stopped before it tips the planet over into runaway climate change.

Sie sind keine lose Abfolge von vier verschiedenen Sätzen, sondern eine Folge deutlich aufeinander bezogener Sätze. Dies gilt zumindest für Kopf- und Finalsatz ab der dritten Symphonie. Das äußert sich meist darin, dass das erste Thema des Kopfsatzes am Ende des Finalsatzes eine überwältigende Apotheose erfährt Die Welt ist bei Bruckner ein Ganzes und geht trotz aller temporären Unklarheiten einem guten Ziel entgegen. Das ist doch tröstlich. Der ganzheitliche Ansatz Bruckners hat oft etwas Überwältigendes. Wir wissen, dass das, was davon handwerklich „gemacht“ werden kann, zu politischen Zwecken missbraucht wurde. Darum sind wir, die wir bekanntlich aus Gnade spät geboren sind, empfindlich geworden (erzogen?) gegen das, was uns überwältigt. Wir sind versucht, solche Dinge nur der Überwältigung wegen zu verdächtigen. Bei Bruckner sind mir diese Apotheosen politisch unverdächtig.

Wie das ARD-Magazin "Report Mainz" berichtet, sollen auf einer Farm des Unternehmens in Twistringen im Landkreis Diepholz tausende Hühner und Hähne auf ihrem  eigenen Kot gehalten werden. Videoaufnahmen belegten zudem, dass die Hühner von Mitarbeitern getreten, geschlagen, gegen Wände und in Transportkisten geschleudert würden. "Wir haben von der Report-Redaktion die Bilder von den Tierquälereien gezeigt bekommen und haben sofort reagiert", sagte Wiesenhof-Pressesprecher Frank Schröter. Von “Katastrophen-Wetter” ist natürlich bei der BILD die Rede, hier liest sich der Bericht wie die aufkommende Schnee-Apokalypse. Ich möchte mit Ihnen jetzt einen entspannten Blick vom Boden der Tatsachen aus auf das kommende Wetter werfen und die Schrei-Meldungen von Zeitungen und sogar einigen Meteorologen wieder ins rechte Licht setzen. Tief Daisy ist auf dem östlichen Atlantik wie so oft am Rand eines weiteren Kaltluftvorstoßes entstanden. Dieses Tief wird nun weiter ostwärts über das Mittelmeer ziehen und sich über dem noch recht milden Meerwasser kräftig verstärken. Dementsprechend muss man auf der Südseite der Alpen auch mit extremerem Wetter durch viel Schnee und Wind rechnen. Ab Freitag streift uns dann Tief Daisy mit erstem Schnee im Süden und später auch in der Mitte Deutschlands mit Schwerpunkt im Osten.

Ein Vb-Tief nimmt dabei nämlich über dem Mittelmeer viel Feuchtigkeit auf, um östlich der Alpen nord- bis nordostwärts zu ziehen. Durch das Aufgleiten auf die kältere Luft entstehen flächendeckend kräftige Niederschläge, die besonders den Osten Deutschlands betreffen. Man muss dabei allerdings sagen, dass wir es hier nicht mit einem “optimalen” Vb-Tief zu tun bekommen. [...] Dadurch kann man endlich auch im Süden häufiger Schneemänner bauen…
